Public Health students from University on the Niger currently undergoing their Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) reached a significant milestone in their field training, participating in an intensive Leadership Training program hosted by the Initiative for Prevention and Control of Diseases (IPCD) at their office in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
IPCD, a prominent Nigerian non-profit and non-governmental organization, is dedicated to the prevention, control, and elimination of Tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and other chronic lung and non-communicable diseases across South East and North Central Nigeria. By taking health screenings, community education, and direct home visits directly to local schools, markets, and remote villages, IPCD works at the grassroots level to ensure early detection and disease prevention.
Through this specialized leadership workshop, our Public Health trainees are building essential skills to complement their field operations:
Strengthening Public Health Leadership
- Strategic Outreach: Trainees are being equipped with modern strategies to effectively lead community-based interventions, health education drives, and field screenings in underserved populations.
- Epidemiological Impact: The program deepens the students’ understanding of managing high-priority public health challenges, specifically TB and HIV, from both clinical and community-mobilization perspectives.
- Capacity Building: Hands-on leadership modules prepare students to coordinate field teams, engage local stakeholders, and execute impactful healthcare initiatives throughout their SIWES placement and future careers.
By training alongside seasoned healthcare professionals at the IPCD office in Mararaba, our students are gaining invaluable, real-world experience in non-profit health administration and community medicine.
