On Monday, July 6, 2026, the University on the Niger officially launched its Smart Community Mapping and Infrastructure Project at the Oba Civic Centre. The event, which brought together scholarship beneficiaries, faculty, and community leaders, marked a bold step toward equipping students with the tools to shape the future of our local infrastructure.
While the primary focus of the day was to introduce students to the technical demands of geo-mapping and infrastructure assessment, the event evolved into a powerful masterclass on the future of work and technology.
The “Creator” Mindset
Canon Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Aniakor, Head of the AI Department, took the stage to challenge the students to look beyond the surface of their devices. He emphasized that the goal of this program is to transform students from mere data users into data creators.
“Yesterday’s economy rewarded those who could read and write. Today’s economy rewards those who can use computers. Tomorrow’s economy will reward those who can create with AI.”
Canon Aniakor urged the scholars to view the training not just as a requirement, but as a gateway. By the end of this program, students are expected to be equipped to lead, build, manage, and improve AI systems. He underscored that in an era of rapid technological advancement, industry relevance is only achieved through rigorous practice and a commitment to becoming godly and competent professionals.
Commitment to Excellence
The Director of SIWES, Dr. Ike Obi, provided the practical foundation for the trainees, walking them through the essential documentation and standard operating procedures required for the duration of their industrial training, ensuring that all participants are fully aligned with the university’s expectations for record-keeping and professional conduct.
The Oba President General (PG) was also in attendance, expressing profound gratitude to the University for selecting Oba as the pilot community. He encouraged the students to remain diligent, reminding them that they carry the hopes of the community and the institution as they begin this mapping exercise.
We are proud to see our scholars taking the first steps toward becoming the architects of tomorrow’s economy. Stay tuned to this page for field reports and project updates as the mapping process continues.
